Why should my pet have a fecal exam?

Yearly fecal exams go a long way to helping to ensure that your pet - and your household - are safe from intestinal parasites. Fecal exams allow your Westport vet to check your pet for otherwise difficult-to-detect intestinal parasites.

What is a fecal exam?

Fecal exams are microscopic examinations of your pet's feces. They are performed at your veterinarian's office.

These tests are used to identify any infections that may compromise your pet's health, or even your family's health.

What do fecals detect?

Intestinal parasites such as hookworms and roundworms can be detected by performing fecal exams. These parasites can lead to more serious conditions - not to mention make your pet irritable and uncomfortable. It's important to note that some of these parasites can also be transmitted from pets to humans, so early detection is important.

Parasites are often invisible, since they live in your pet's gastrointestinal tract. A fecal exam is the only way they can be detected.

How do I prepare for my pet's fecal?

You should collect a fresh stool sample and bring it to your vet on the same day - ideally within 4 to 6 hours - to get the most accurate results. We recommend this because if stool samples become dehydrated or dried out, this could kill many potential parasites and may mask their presence.

How often does my pet need a fecal?

We recommend that all pets should have fecal exams at least once a year to test for parasites. Animals and puppies with gastrointestinal issues may require more frequent fecals. Your vet will be able to tell you how often you should bring in your pet's stool sample.

Fecal exams are included as part of our annual Wellness Plans. Choose the Wellness Plan that's right for your pet.
